ABSTRACTION OF DANCE

Level 1 | Term 01
Assignment : Individual
Studio Instructors : Khondaker Hasibul Kabir, Rahat Mujib Niaz

The brief for this project was to select a dance video, study its movements, beats, rhythms, and most importantly, its emotional essence, and then transform these elements into a 3D composition that captured the dance’s unique spirit. I chose a contemporary dance with geometric movements performed in a dark, mysterious ambiance.

My initial concept was to compose various objects that depicted the movements within a dark-colored box, illuminated from the back to evoke a sense of mystery and illusion. Later, the project evolved when we were asked to create a more interactive installation within the studio space. In no time all the suitable spaces got occupied by my peers and i was left with nothing exiting!
Back then, I was just beginning to understand the concept of “thinking outside the box,” and one day inspiration struck! What if I placed my project outside the studio window? By wrapping the window in black paper and using tracing paper to filter the sunlight, I could create the desired effect while making my installation unique and innovative.

With my teachers’ approval, I constructed the composition using cardboard and supporting frameworks outside the window. The interplay of natural light filtered through the tracing paper transformed the installation, introduced dynamism with the movement of viewers, creating a captivating and ethereal atmosphere.

Assignment : Individual

During the midterm exam break, we were tasked with this assignment of recreating a portrait of a famous person. The objective was to study and understand the tonal values of an image or photograph.

We selected a gray scale photograph of a famous person, divide it in 72×72 grids and scaled the grids on a 20”x20” cartridge paper, find the tonal value of each box in the photograph and apply the tonal value for specific box in the plate.

I selected Gorge Harrison from the band “Beatles.”

MULTIPURPOSE FURNITURE

Level 1 | Term 02
Assignment : Individual
Studio Instructors : Sudipta Barua, Mania Tahsina Taher

As the final project of the studio, we were tasked with designing a multipurpose furniture and craft a 1:1 model of it. I designed a simple rectangular stool with readily available materials. It had notches around the wall and acts as a foot rest. One side of the stool is operable and it hides some stationary compartments and a drawer for storage.
